Retro platformer game

AlterEgo (SEGA MEGADRIVE \ GENESIS) is a 2D platformer game created by indie developers, RetroSouls. In this video game, you will play as a hero who has a phantom twin, which mirrors your every move. The movements are mirrored horizontally or vertically, depending on the levels. More, you can use this skill to collect items and even avoid the enemies. AlterEgo is a game programmed with C language, powered by SGDK. It comes with a retro design, keeping the 16-bit games alive.

Use your twin to your advantage

AlterEgo will put you on a quest inside a maze-like map. Here, various items and enemies abound, which you need to collect and avoid, respectively. To do so, you can use the help of your phantom twin. As noted, in some levels, the movements are mirrored horizontally while in some, vertically. You can switch between the hero and his alter ego to complete a level. However, the number of switches is limited. More, you need to be wary of using it as you can end up trapped if you swap too many times.

You can play the game using a directional pad (Dpad) to control your character. You can use the directional button to move around. The A and B, meanwhile, allows you to switch between the main hero and its phantom switch. The C button, on the other hand, lets you restart a level, and the start button allows you to pause the game.

AlterEgo is a 16-bit retro game reminiscent of popular console games back in the day. Even the gameplay is very much like the classic games. You will be faced with difficulty as you level up. Something that will probably have you replaying some levels over and over before you manage to complete it. The only downer is that there isn’t much in terms of rewards.

Old-school fun

AlterEgo (SEGA MEGADRIVE \ GENESIS) offers a fun experience for players who are into old-school strategy games. From the gameplay to the art style, everything in this game screams classic. But what sets it apart from classic platformer games is the alter ego, which can be a hindrance or a help.

PROS

  • Unique concept
  • Retro art styling
  • Allows you to switch control between the hero and the alter ego
